About Dr. Nanci Smith
Dr. Nanci Smith is currently a full-time consultant in the areas of Mathematics, Curriculum, Common Core State Standards and Differentiated Instruction.
She has been a national and international consultant for fourteen years. Her work includes professional development in her areas of expertise in small,
large, urban, rural and suburban districts. As well as providing professional development in 45 states and 9 countries, she has worked in schools in
Netherlands, Dutch West Indies, Singapore and Japan. Smith has presented at conferences and institutes across the United States including as a Featured
Speaker for the NCTM Annual Meeting, and in Southeast Asia, Europe and the Middle East. She was part of a team to develop quality curriculum in the
Philippines, based on the integration of Differentiated Instruction and Understanding by Design. In addition to providing professional development,
Smith has conducted mathematics program and curriculum audits for several districts across the country.
Dr. Smith taught math at the high school and university level, and fully implemented differentiated instruction in her classroom prior to becoming a
full-time consultant. She has taught several Masters level courses in Differentiated.
Dr. Smith received her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, Mathematics Education from Arizona State University. She is Nationally Board Certified in
Adolescent and Young Adult Mathematics. Smith was the math consultant and author of the User’s Guide for ASCD’s Meaningful Math: Leading Students
Toward Understanding and Application DVD series, and has developed a CD/DVD-based professional development series for middle school math teachers.
Her classroom was featured in ASCD’s video series, At Work in the Differentiated Classroom. She authored a chapter in the ASCD book, Differentiation
in Practice, grades 5 – 9, as well as assorted lessons in other ASCD books on differentiation and published interviews in on-line publications.
Dr. Smith is an active consultant for both ASCD and Solution Tree. She is currently the Arizona Association of Teachers of Mathematics (AATM) secretary
and serves on the Leadership committee for the State Conference.
